Sophisticated Patterned Tile Flooring

Patterned floor tiles are a magnificent choice for even the busiest spaces in a home. Building on the durability and water resistance of tile, patterns bring art into spaces where function may have been called “good enough.” Learn about different types of tile patterns, how they complement a space, and how to choose the right tiles for your project.

A Guide to Floor Tile Patterns

Floor tile patterns use individual tiles to create a visually appealing design that enhances an entire room. People are programmed to spot patterns, and that natural instinct is gratified with a beautifully devised and expertly installed tile floor.

Today, many floor tile patterns are pre-made and assembled in sections, especially if the design is complex. This makes installation easier. Custom patterned tile flooring is laid by hand and finished on-site, providing a seamless and totally unique look using time-honored techniques.

Types of Floor Tile Patterns

Several tile laying patterns are used in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas of the home. Each makes a unique impression and appeals to different tastes.

Basic Tile Patterns

  • Straight lay tile: This is also known as grid style. The tiles are laid in straight, uniform lines to create a simple pattern that can still pop with bright, contrasting colors.
  • Diagonal lay tile: Tiles are installed at a 45-degree angle to the walls. Otherwise, this pattern is identical to straight lay. This approach usually makes a small room feel more spacious.
  • Offset lay tile: Also known as “brick lay,” this pattern requires laying tile in offset rows; each row is shifted over by half a tile’s width, similar to how bricks are laid. This pattern draws the eye more than straight and diagonal patterns, and it is most commonly used with rectangular tiles.

Complex Floor Tile Patterns

  • Herringbone tile pattern: To achieve this sophisticated look, rectangular tiles are laid in a zigzag pattern of interlocking V-shapes. This style typically makes the flooring the central visual element of the room.
  • Chevron tile pattern: The chevron pattern is similar to herringbone, but it uses modified-rectangle tiles with the ends cut at 45-degree angles. This produces a continuous zigzag line that readily leads the eye.
  • Basket weave tile pattern: This tile layout features rectangular tiles grouped in twos or threes laid perpendicular to similar groups, creating the look of a woven basket.
  • Other geometric floor tile patterns: Favorite geometric options include honeycomb patterns using hexagonal tiles, dimensional “cube” styles using different-colored diamond shapes, and tile borders around central designs.
  • Mosaic floor patterns: Intricate mosaic tile offers endless design possibilities. It’s a favorite among homeowners who want artful, fun flooring that’s also durable.

What Tile Pattern Is Best?

Choosing a floor tile pattern is a matter of taste. These important factors influence tile decisions.

  • Shape and Size: Some tile pattern layouts are only possible with specific tile shapes (squares, rectangles, hexagons) or sizes. For example, if you already know you want larger tiles, this will narrow down your pattern options.
  • Room size: Patterned floor tiles affect the viewer’s perception of the room in a big way. For example, grid and diagonal patterns make a space seem longer or bigger. In some cases, patterned floor tiles do make a room look smaller. This usually occurs when using larger tiles or patterns in a small space. The grout color or tile color can exacerbate or lessen this effect.
  • Décor and style preferences: If the décor in the room is subtle and neutral, you may opt for a dramatic tile floor pattern (for contrast) or an understated style (for blending in). Either way, let your personal style shine through in your flooring choices.
